Appeals

Effective appellate advocacy is necessary if you are involved in litigation. Whether you win at trial or lose, either side can appeal.

At HSL, our trial litigators also are experienced appellate lawyers. Because of HSL’s appellate experience, our lawyers begin preparing your case for appeal from the very start of litigation. The key to the success of every appeal starts with the record made at the trial court level. Because HSL lawyers know how to win on appeal, they begin implementing winning appellate strategies as soon as a lawsuit begins. Although HSL attorneys are confident that they will achieve the best result for their clients at the trial court level, sometimes an appeal is necessary, to either defend a victory against the appeal of the losing party or secure the full relief owed to our clients. If an appeal is necessary, HSL attorneys are prepared and experienced to take an appeal to the highest level, even to the United States Supreme Court, to make sure that the case is correctly decided.

HSL attorneys handle appellate matters in state and federal courts, in civil and criminal cases, and from state administrative agencies.

Bruce R. Heurlin, one of the firm’s founding shareholders, has participated in over 50 appeals to the Arizona Court of Appeals, the Arizona Supreme Court, the Seventh, Ninth, Tenth Circuit Courts of Appeals, and the U.S. Supreme Court. Mr. Heurlin also has participated in appellate seminars. Appellate work is a substantial part of Mr. Heurlin’s practice.

Brian A. Laird's appellate practice includes appeals, special actions, and motion work in the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals and Arizona appellate courts.
